You always know Halloween is on the way when you begin to notice Halloween pumpkins appearing in front gardens and in autumnal decorations. Halloween may only come once a year but the ritual of carving pumpkins and setting out jack-o’-lanterns — as well as all the scary decor that Halloween is so well known for — make the spooky season a rival only to Christmas as the moment for home decoration.

Lucky for us that Halloween occurs in the fall with all its gorgeous rich autumnal color that is first found with the marvelous sight of the changing of the leaves. Pumpkins participate in this colorful display with their quintessential orange colors that complement the seasonal palette so effectively. Lots of people like to carve biggerdon’t forget the smaller varieties that are edible: this is a period that makes use of tempting pumpkin recipes. We’re accustomed to having pumpkin pie at the time of Thanksgiving, but there a lot of other recipes that put to good use the pumpkin flesh that’s left behind after our carving efforts, such as soup, bread and cakes.

If you’re planning to try carving your pumpkins at home, there are specially designed carving tools on the market to make all sorts of shapes and help you remove the fleshy pulp inside the fruits. Take care when you’re working with sharp tools, of course — and let only the adults do all the cutting. Then the kids can amuse themselves decorating the pumpkins afterwards.

Pumpkins may seem durable and hard wearing when they’re freshly bought, but in the end they will decay, especially when placed outside. To make sure that your gruesome gourds have as long a decorative life as possible, don’t start carving them too early in case they start going stale or decayingalso helps to put them in a cool, shady spot.

Is this your first time trying your hand at pumpkin carving? If so, start simple at first and don’t attempt a pattern that’s too complicated. You’ll see that the ghostly glimmer of a classic pumpkin is really effective even with a basic design. If you’re more confident or feel like attempting at something more unique, you can print your pattern on paper and trace it onto the pumpkin’s skin with a marker or cut around an outline.

Last, don’t feel you have to carve your pumpkin at all if you don’t want to. There are loads of amusing designs and effects you can achieve simply by decorating its surface. You can make impressive designs with paint and stickers that will make your jack-o’-lanterns splendidly unique.
